Netherlands Researcher Residence Permit
At a glance
Researchers, doctoral candidates, and researchers funded by grants may qualify to live in the Netherlands for an approved project. You need a Dutch research institution approved by the immigration service, IND, to host you. This permit, under Directive (EU) 2016/801, is for people who are not EU, EEA, or Swiss citizens.
- Host
- Recognized Dutch research institution
- Roles
- Researchers, doctoral candidates, and some mobility researchers
- Project agreement
- The host must approve the research project and enter into the required hosting or employment agreement
Summary
The Netherlands’ researcher category lets researchers live there for an accepted research arrangement. A recognized Dutch institution supports the application with a hosting agreement, employment contract, or other qualifying arrangement. Confirm how the planned research or doctoral work fits the category. The institution's accepted sponsor status and the actual agreement matter alongside academic credentials.
-
Confirm the recognized research institution Check that the host is recognized for the correct sponsor category.
-
Formalize the project and support Prepare the hosting or appointment agreement, project duration, funding, and academic assessment.
-
Use the appropriate sponsored or mobility process The host applies; an existing EU researcher permit may call for a separate mobility procedure.
Private research interest or informal discussions with a host do not replace a formal approved project.
Eligibility
EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.
The applicant must be coming as a paid researcher, an unpaid researcher supported by a grant, or a doctoral candidate. The Dutch host must appear in the IND register of recognized research sponsors.
The researcher normally needs a higher-education degree that provides access to a doctoral program. If the person does not have a suitable degree, the recognized sponsor may instead declare that the applicant has the appropriate level.
The institution must approve the project's aim, duration, and funding and enter into the required host agreement or employment arrangement. The applicant must have sufficient income. As of 1 July through 31 December 2026, the published researcher amount is €1,635.90 gross SV salary per month without holiday allowance, or €1,766.77 with it; always check the current IND table.
Additional professional rules can apply. Certain individual healthcare roles require BIG registration. General passport, public-order, and, where applicable, tuberculosis requirements also apply.
Researchers who already hold a Directive 2016/801 permit in another participating EU country use mobility rules: Dutch research over 180 days requires long-term mobility and a Dutch permit, while a stay of no more than 180 days in a 360-day period generally uses the notification-based short-term mobility process.
More about this route
It is a sponsor-based route. Independent research interest is not enough: the Dutch institution must formally host the applicant, approve the project, and apply for the permit.
What This Route Allows
The permit allows the approved research, doctoral, or grant-funded work at the recognized sponsor. The holder may also work as an employee outside the research role if the other employer obtains a work permit, and may work as a self-employed person while continuing to meet the researcher-permit conditions.
The residence period generally follows the host agreement, appointment, or employment contract, up to the applicable maximum. Family members can normally accompany the researcher, and a partner is generally free to work.
After qualifying research ends, the researcher may be able to apply for a one-year orientation permit within 3 years to look for work or start work.
What This Route Is Not
It is not a permit for someone doing private or remote research without a recognized Dutch host. Discussions with an institution do not replace a formal host agreement or appointment.
It is also different from the Highly Skilled Migrant route used for some university jobs and from the student permit. The correct route depends on the role, sponsor category, contract, and project arrangement.
Next Steps
- Confirm that the Dutch institution is recognized for the research sponsor category.
- Obtain the host agreement, employment contract, appointment, or grant documentation.
- Have the sponsor document the project aim, duration, funding, and academic-level assessment.
- Check current income, professional-registration, MVV, and general residence requirements.
- If the applicant already holds a Directive 2016/801 permit elsewhere in the EU, use the short- or long-term mobility process instead of assuming a first Dutch application.
