Andorran Citizenship After Residence
At a glance
If you have made Andorra your long-term home, you may be able to apply for citizenship. The usual rule requires 20 years of principal and permanent residence, which can include separate periods, plus at least the final five years actually living there as your main home. A separate route combines ten years of residence immediately before applying with the required Andorran schooling.
- Standard route
- 20 total years of principal residence, with the final five years actually living in Andorra
- School route
- Ten years living in Andorra immediately before applying, plus the required Andorran schooling
- Other requirements
- Language and community-ties evidence, criminal-record checks, and proof that you gave up other citizenship
Summary
Andorra offers two residence-based ways to apply for citizenship: a long-residence route and a shorter route linked to Andorran schooling. You must document the residence periods that apply to your case and provide the required language, community-ties, and criminal-record evidence. Time spent holding a permit does not by itself establish eligibility.
You also need to complete Andorra’s process for giving up other citizenship. This can involve provisional nationality before proof that the other citizenship has ended, so the order of those steps matters. Meeting the residence threshold does not guarantee approval.
-
Choose the route that fits The standard residence route and the school-based route have different residence and education tests.
-
Document residence and integration Map the relevant periods and collect local records supporting the chosen basis.
-
Confirm the nationality-loss sequence Check provisional nationality and proof-of-loss requirements before taking an irreversible step.
Residence alone does not grant citizenship. The requirement to give up another nationality needs careful planning.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You already live in Andorra as your main and permanent home.
- You can prove 20 years of principal and permanent residence and at least five immediately preceding years of principal and effective residence; or you have the ten immediately preceding years of residence and the qualifying Andorran school history.
- You can show integration into Andorran life.
- Within the allowed period, you can provide proof that you lost your existing citizenship or citizenships and swear that you have not acted to undo that loss. The government's acquisition page describes provisional Andorran nationality while this condition is completed.
- You have not been convicted of an intentional offense resulting in at least one year of imprisonment, or of two or more intentional offenses, while those convictions remain on the criminal record.
For the school-based route, the government describes at least ten school years in an Andorran public or private institution teaching the specific Andorran curriculum. A foreign study cycle of no more than 12 months can be counted, or a shorter period can qualify if the person completed all compulsory schooling in Andorra.
Meeting the listed conditions does not guarantee approval. The government may refuse naturalization for public-order or national-interest reasons.
What This Route Allows
If approved and the existing-nationality condition is completed, this route leads to Andorran citizenship. The government's process can involve provisional nationality while the applicant proves loss of other citizenship within the stated period; until then, the person must keep the immigration registration and renew the underlying immigration authorization where required.
What This Route Is Not
This is not automatic citizenship after living in Andorra for a few years, and ordinary residence permits do not themselves prove integration or satisfaction of the nationality law. It is not a dual-citizenship route on the assumption that the applicant can simply retain every existing nationality. Marriage, origin, adoption and nationality through a parent or grandparent have different tests and should not be folded into ordinary naturalization.
Next Steps
- Map every period of principal and permanent residence needed for the 20-year route and the five immediately preceding effective-residence years. If using the school route, document the ten-year residence and complete school history.
- Gather residence permits, local registration records, tax or employment records, and housing records.
- Obtain written advice on the citizenship-loss requirement before taking any irreversible step. Confirm the sequence for provisional Andorran nationality and proof of loss.
- Prepare integration evidence, including language and community ties where relevant.
