Belize Family Dependent Permit
At a glance
Belize’s Dependent’s Permit is for someone already living in Belize who is at least 55, has a disability, or is a child under five. A spouse, child, parent, or sibling living in Belize must apply for them and provide housing and ongoing support.
- Dependent
- Age 55+, disabled, or a child under 5
- Sponsor
- A resident of Belize who is the dependent's spouse, child, parent, or sibling
- Evidence needed
- Support, accommodation, relationship, identity, bank, and return-travel records
Summary
Belize’s dependent category covers specified relatives who are at least fifty-five, have a disability, or are children under five. The sponsor must live in Belize and have an accepted spouse, child, parent, or sibling relationship with the applicant. This is narrower than residence for every family member.
The published spouse instructions say “wife only,” so a husband seeking dependent status must confirm eligibility with Immigration. The file also needs evidence of support, accommodation, identity, banking, and return travel before the permission is entered in the dependent’s passport.
-

-

This is a narrow dependent category, not residence for every relative of a Belizean. The permit does not itself provide work permission or permanent residence.
Eligibility
The case needs all of the following:
- A qualifying dependent: the person is at least 55, is disabled, or is a child under five.
- Presence in Belize: Immigration describes the permit as one that may be issued to a qualifying person residing in Belize.
- A sponsor residing in Belize: the application is made by a resident of Belize who can provide and continue to provide adequate accommodation and support.
- An immediate-family relationship: the sponsor and dependent are spouses, parent and child, or siblings.
- The required records: financial support, identity, relationship, bank, passport, photographs, and return-travel evidence must be provided.
The relationship direction matters. A Belize resident may apply for a qualifying spouse, child, parent, or sibling, but the person receiving the permit must still fit the age, disability, or under-five category. Being married to, descended from, or related to a Belizean does not by itself satisfy this permit.
Documents
Immigration's current page lists:
- a letter of financial support;
- photographs;
- the birth certificate or marriage certificate that proves the relationship;
- a letter of authority where required;
- the dependent's passport;
- the listed proof of Belizean identity;
- a recent bank statement; and
- a one-year return ticket.
The published spouse category says “wife only.” A husband seeking dependent status should confirm eligibility with Immigration rather than assume the same category applies. Provide the marriage certificate for a spouse application. For a child, provide the child's birth certificate. For a parent, the sponsor's birth certificate connects the two people. For siblings, both birth certificates are used to establish the link. A sibling under 18 also needs a letter of authority from the child's parents. A document not in English must be translated by the proper authority and signed.
The support letter and bank evidence should make the arrangement easy to understand: who will pay for living costs, where the dependent will live, and how support will continue. Do not assume that a general invitation letter will substitute for the specific records Immigration lists.
Fees
The official page lists nationality-based fees in Belize dollars, effective from May 1, 2020:
- BZD 3,000 for a national of the People's Republic of China;
- BZD 750 for nationals of India, Nepal, Thailand, Burma/Myanmar, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka; and
- BZD 200 for all other nationals.
Because fee tables can change, confirm the amount directly with Immigration immediately before applying. The fact that a current page still displays an effective date in 2020 does not guarantee that an unofficial copy is current.
What This Route Allows
The permit allows the named dependent to remain in Belize under the terms of the Dependent's Permit placed in the passport. It provides a documented status for a person who depends on an eligible close relative living in Belize.
It can be useful where the dependent cannot realistically qualify through employment and meets the age, disability, or young-child requirement. The official page says the application is processed on submission, but applicants should not interpret that wording as guaranteed same-day issuance or approval; Immigration still has to review the records and accept the case.
What This Route Is Not
This permit is not:
- a general residence permit for every spouse, parent, child, or sibling of a Belizean;
- available to an adult dependent under 55 solely because the person is financially supported, unless the disability category applies;
- a substitute for citizenship by descent for a child who already has a Belizean parent;
- citizenship through marriage for a person married to a Belizean for at least one year;
- permanent residence or a direct shortcut to permanent residence;
- permission to work in Belize; or
- proof that a distant relative or unmarried partner qualifies as an immediate-family sponsor.
The Immigration page does not publish an automatic citizenship clock, a general renewal promise, or an unrestricted work right for this permit. A dependent who wants employment needs to determine whether a Temporary Employment Permit is required. A person seeking permanent residence must separately meet Belize's residence rules, including the applicable legal-residence, physical-presence, financial, criminal, medical, and documentary requirements.
Next Steps
- Confirm the dependent category first. Record the person's age or obtain the medical evidence needed to establish disability. Do not start with the family relationship alone.
- Confirm both people are in the right position to apply. The dependent should be residing in Belize, and the sponsor must reside there and be able to provide ongoing accommodation and support.
- Prove the exact relationship. Obtain the relevant long-form birth or marriage certificates. For siblings, build the parent link with both birth records; for a minor sibling, obtain the parental authority letter.
- Prepare financial and accommodation evidence. Use a recent bank statement and a clear support letter. Bring any additional residence or identity evidence the local office requests from the sponsor.
- Arrange translations. Have non-English civil records translated by the proper authority and signed before submission.
- Check entry and stay validity. The dependent must have a valid passport and lawful basis for being in Belize while the permit is processed. Do not let a visitor authorization expire while assuming the family application protects the person.
- Confirm the live fee and office. Ask the Immigration office which nationality-based fee applies, what form of payment is accepted, and whether an appointment is required.
- Ask separately about work and long-term plans. If the dependent expects to work or pursue permanent residence, get written guidance on the separate permit or residence requirements.
