Luxembourg Family Reunification Residence

Luxembourg Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

Certain close relatives can apply to join someone living legally in Luxembourg. The rules depend on the resident's citizenship or status, including whether they have international protection. That determines which relatives qualify, what financial support is needed, and how to apply.

Sponsor
Qualifying family member legally living in Luxembourg
Parents
Usually must show established dependency, not only a wish to live nearby
Documents
Proof of the covered relationship, sponsor's status, and any required support or dependency history

Summary

Eligible relatives can apply to live with family in Luxembourg, with different rules for sponsors who are Luxembourgish or other European citizens, other lawful residents, or people with international protection. That basis determines the accepted relatives, evidence and financial conditions. Spouses and children are not assessed identically to dependent parents or other relatives.

Where dependency is required, officials examine the actual need and sustained support before the move. A new promise to support an independent relative may not qualify. Establish the family category before collecting records or relying on the duration and work rights of a possible permit.

The sponsor framework changes the relationship and support rules
  1. Check your family member's status’s exact status Distinguish Luxembourgish or covered-European citizenship, third-country residence and international protection.
  2. Document the eligible relationship and prior dependency Apply the relevant age, custody, cohabitation and material-support tests before the move.
  3. Use the matching permission process Check any prior authorization, income-history, housing and insurance requirements for that sponsor category.

A promise of future support is not always proof of existing dependency. European-family cards and national family permits have different procedures and conditions.

Eligibility

EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

Joining a Luxembourgish, EU, EEA or Swiss citizen

Core categories generally include:

The categories can also extend to the citizen's spouse or partner's descendants and ascendants. Rules are narrower for some student sponsors. Dependency must normally exist before the move and should be shown with evidence of need in the country of origin and sustained material support, not only a promise of future support.

Joining another third-country national

The sponsor normally needs a residence permit valid for at least one year and a reasonable prospect of permanent residence. The ordinary categories are principally:

The Minister may also admit a dependent parent after the sponsor has lived lawfully in Luxembourg for at least 12 months if necessary family support is unavailable in the parent's country of origin. An unmarried adult child unable to support themselves because of their health may also be considered. Officials decide these additional family cases individually; approval is not automatic.

The sponsor must normally show suitable housing, health insurance and stable, regular and sufficient resources. Luxembourg generally assesses income over the preceding 12 months against the average social minimum wage for an unskilled worker; a shorter recent period may sometimes be considered. That wage is €2,771.33 gross per month from 1 June 2026 and changes with indexation. The housing benchmark is generally 12 square meters for the first occupant plus 9 square meters for each additional occupant, along with health and safety standards.

Joining a beneficiary of international protection

Special rules cover a spouse or registered partner, minor children and the parents of an unaccompanied minor beneficiary. The ordinary resource and housing conditions do not apply when the qualifying family application is made within the official 6-month period; later applications are assessed under those ordinary conditions. Insurance and the other procedural requirements still need to be checked.

Civil-status documents, custody or consent evidence, proof of dependency, sponsor residence documents, income history, housing and insurance are central. Foreign records may need legalization (official checks confirming a document's origin for use abroad) or an apostille (a certificate verifying an official signature or seal for use abroad) and an accepted translation.

More about this route

Marriage or parenthood does not by itself settle every requirement. Adult children, parents and other relatives face narrow dependency or exceptional-circumstances tests.

What This Route Allows

A non-EU family member joining a Luxembourgish, EU, EEA or Swiss citizen normally uses the free-movement family route and receives a residence card valid for 5 years, or for the citizen's intended stay if shorter. The card holder may work as an employee or self-employed person without a separate work authorization. Permanent residence may be available after 5 years of qualifying continuous residence with the citizen.

A family member joining another third-country national normally receives a one-year renewable “family member” permit, no longer than the sponsor's permit, and has access to salaried and self-employed activity. A separate residence right can become possible after no more than 5 years, and in some changed-family circumstances after 3 years, if the conditions set by law are met. EU long-term resident status is a separate application after 5 years of qualifying legal residence.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a general visa for any relative. Siblings, grandparents, adult children without qualifying dependency or health needs, and financially independent parents do not qualify merely because family lives in Luxembourg.

It is also not enough to create dependency shortly before applying. Officials can examine the history, necessity and regularity of support, the family circumstances in the country of origin and whether documents are reliable.

Next Steps

  1. Check your family member's exact citizenship or Luxembourg residence status.
  2. Match the applicant to the precise family category and confirm any age, custody or dependency conditions.
  3. Build a dated record of the relationship and, where relevant, support or care before the application.
  4. For a third-country sponsor, check the 12-month income history, indexed wage reference, housing size and insurance.
  5. Obtain family-status, custody, residence and background records early and arrange any required authentication and translation.
  6. Follow the correct pre-entry or residence-card process for the sponsor category rather than traveling on the assumption that approval is automatic.
