Nigerian Citizenship After Residence

Nigeria Citizenship
Pathway overview

At a glance

If you have lived in Nigeria for many years and plan to make it your permanent home, you may be able to apply for citizenship through naturalization. You must meet the residence and other requirements, and the President must approve the application. A long stay alone does not guarantee citizenship.

Residence option 1
15 continuous years immediately before applying
Residence option 2
The last 12 months continuously, plus at least 15 years in the 20 years before those 12 months
Life in Nigeria
Plans for a permanent home, acceptance in your local community, becoming part of Nigerian life, and a useful contribution

Summary

Long-term residents can apply to become Nigerian citizens through naturalization after either fifteen continuous years immediately before filing, or the latest twelve months continuously plus fifteen years within the twenty-year period before those twelve months. Applicants must also intend a permanent home and show community acceptance and a useful contribution.

The Ministry examines residence, financial, tax, character and supporting records, and presidential approval is required. Completing the minimum timeline does not guarantee citizenship. Other citizenship acquired after birth can raise a separate renunciation requirement, which needs confirmation before any action is taken.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Section 27 of the Constitution requires an adult who is legally able to make the application, has good character, and intends to make Nigeria a permanent home. You must also show that you are accepted by your local community, have become part of Nigerian life, and can make a useful contribution to the country. The Oath of Allegiance is required.

You must meet one of these residence requirements:

These are different timelines. Check your residence permits and travel history against the full rule, rather than counting any 15 years you have spent in Nigeria.

The Ministry of Interior’s checklist includes your birth certificate, passport pages, residence permit, evidence of how you support yourself, tax clearance, guarantor records, and evidence of contributions to the community or economy. Further documents and checks may be required.

Section 28 can require you to give up another citizenship if you did not hold it by birth. If this applies, the grant depends on completing that renunciation within the required period afterward. Officially published copies give different deadlines, five or twelve months; obtain written confirmation from the Ministry before relying on either. Voluntarily acquiring or keeping another citizenship not held by birth can also cause loss of Nigerian citizenship after naturalization.

Applying for Nigerian citizenship after a long stay
  1. Check the full residence timeline Compare your permits and travel history with both residence options.
  2. Prepare community, personal, and citizenship records Document your life in Nigeria and resolve any other-nationality requirements.
  3. Apply for the government’s decision Complete the required oath and any confirmed renunciation steps before seeking a passport.

The residence period is only one requirement, and approval is not automatic.

What This Route Allows

After approval, the required oath, and any required renunciation, you become a Nigerian citizen by naturalization. You can then apply separately for a passport and other documents.

The Constitution allows naturalized citizenship to be taken away in specific circumstances. Those rules differ from the rules for citizenship by birth, so understand them before making decisions about another nationality.

What This Route Is Not

Residence, tax payments, or meeting the minimum requirements do not guarantee approval. This is an application for citizenship after a long stay, not a first residence visa or automatic permanent residence.

Naturalization is separate from citizenship by registration and Special Immigrant Status. It does not offer unrestricted dual citizenship.

Next Steps

  1. Prepare a complete residence and travel timeline and check both residence options.
  2. Document your plans to make Nigeria your permanent home, community ties, and useful contributions.
  3. Gather the Ministry’s current tax, support, passport, residence, character, and guarantor records.
  4. List every citizenship you hold and how you acquired it, and confirm any renunciation requirement and deadline.
  5. Apply through the Ministry’s current portal and obtain advice for your case before giving up any citizenship.
