An adult born outside Nigeria with legal capacity to apply
Family connection
A grandparent who is Nigerian or counts as Nigerian under the historical rule
Other requirements
Good character, plans to make Nigeria a permanent home, and the oath

Summary

If you are an adult born outside Nigeria and have a Nigerian-citizen grandparent, you may be able to apply for citizenship by registration. This means asking the government to grant citizenship. You need to prove the family connection, meet the other requirements, and receive presidential approval.

If a parent was a Nigerian citizen when you were born, first check citizenship by birth under section 25: you may already be a citizen.

Eligibility

Section 26(2)(b) requires birth outside Nigeria, adult status and legal capacity to apply, and a grandparent who is or is treated by law as a Nigerian citizen. You must also show good character, intend to make Nigeria your permanent home, and take the Oath of Allegiance.

Section 31 can help with older family histories. An ancestor can count as a Nigerian citizen at your birth if they would have been a citizen by birth had they been alive at independence. You still need to prove each family relationship and the facts that make that rule apply.

The Ministry of Interior’s checklist asks for your birth certificate, passport and residence documents, family citizenship evidence, relevant marriage records, and guarantor records. It also mentions parent and great-grandparent documents. Those can help prove that your grandparent was Nigerian; a great-grandparent alone is not the direct qualifying relationship in section 26(2)(b).

Under section 28, a citizenship you acquired other than by birth may have to be formally given up after registration. Officially published copies give different deadlines, five or twelve months. Obtain written confirmation from the Ministry and resolve how the rule affects you before applying or giving up any nationality.

Applying for Nigerian citizenship through a grandparent
  1. Check the grandparent connection First check citizenship by birth if you also have a qualifying Nigerian parent.
  2. Prepare family records and plans for life in Nigeria Document the relationship, citizenship, character, and permanent-home intention.
  3. Apply and complete the required steps Resolve any renunciation requirement and wait for approval before seeking a passport.

A great-grandparent’s records may support the evidence, but the direct qualifying relative here is a grandparent.

What This Route Allows

Once approved and the required steps are complete, you become a Nigerian citizen by registration. You can then apply separately for a passport and other citizenship documents.

This citizenship has different rules from citizenship by birth, including limits on other nationalities and circumstances in which citizenship can be taken away. Check those consequences for your situation.

What This Route Is Not

Citizenship is not automatically passed down from any Nigerian ancestor. This route requires an adult born abroad with the qualifying grandparent connection and plans to make Nigeria a permanent home. Approval is not guaranteed.

Next Steps

  1. Use official birth and family records to connect you to your parent and grandparent.
  2. Establish your grandparent’s Nigerian citizenship, including any historical rule that applies.
  3. Gather the current passport, residence, marriage or name-change, character, and guarantor records.
  4. Prepare evidence of your plans to make Nigeria a permanent home.
  5. Check every other citizenship under section 28 and confirm the Ministry’s current application and renunciation instructions before acting.
