British Citizenship for UK-Born Children
At a glance
A child born in the UK from January 1, 1983 who was not British at birth may register as British if a parent later becomes British or gains settled status. A related rule covers a parent who joins the UK armed forces after the birth. The application must be made before the child turns 18.

Summary
A child born in the UK may qualify to register as British when a parent later becomes British, obtains settled status, or enters qualifying armed-forces service. The family must make the registration application before the child turns 18 and provide the parent's status history. Good-character checks apply from age ten.
Eligibility
The child must have been born in the UK and not already be British. For section 1(3), a legal parent must later have become British or acquired a status amounting to settlement—such as indefinite leave or EUSS settled status—while the child was a minor. For section 1(3A), the child must have been born on or after 13 January 2010 and a parent must have joined the UK armed forces while the child was under 18.
A child aged 10 or older must meet the current good-character requirement. Registration is a legal entitlement if the facts are met; it does not depend on the child's own immigration status. The fee from 8 April 2026 is £1,000, with an affordability fee waiver available for an eligible child.

Start with birth Confirm citizenship was not automatic The child must have been born in the UK and not already be British; check the special EUSS rules as well.

-
Before 18th birthday Submit the child’s registration File before age 18 and address good character from age 10 and the other documentary requirements.
This is an application for registration, not an automatic result of a parent settling. Section 1(3A) has a related armed-forces rule with its own birth-date condition. Successful registration gives citizenship otherwise than by descent.
What This Route Allows
Registration gives British citizenship otherwise than by descent, the right of abode and access to a British passport. There is no renewal or settlement stage, and the child can normally pass citizenship to a future child born outside the UK.
What This Route Is Not
A parent settling later usually means the child must register before age 18. Some children become British automatically when a parent receives a qualifying later grant of EU Settlement Scheme status; check that exception first. It is also not needed if the parent was already British or settled at birth, because the child may have been British automatically.
Next Steps
- Obtain the full UK birth certificate and confirm the child was not British at birth.
- Obtain the parent's naturalization, registration, ILR, EUSS or armed-forces evidence with the effective date.
- Address identity, parentage and any good-character matters.
- File Form MN1 before age 18 and request a child fee waiver first if necessary.
