Summary
If you were born in the UK but didn't become British at birth, you may still be entitled to citizenship if you lived in the UK continuously for your first ten years. Often the right route for adults born in the UK to temporary-visa parents who grew up there.
Eligibility
The applicant must have been born in the UK on or after 1 January 1983 and not already be British. They must have spent no more than 90 days outside the UK in each of the first ten years. The Home Secretary can disregard excess absences; children's guidance says absences up to 180 days in a year and 990 days over ten years are normally disregarded, while larger excesses require compelling circumstances. The absence rules still need to be checked carefully.
There is no requirement that a parent became settled, and no English or Life in the UK test. Applicants aged 10 or over must satisfy good character. A child pays £1,000 and may seek a fee waiver; an adult pays £1,670 including ceremony under the fees effective 8 April 2026.
-
Born on or after January 1, 1983 Establish the qualifying UK birth Obtain the full birth record and confirm the applicant is not already British.
-
First ten years of life Build a year-by-year residence record Assess the ordinary 90-day absence limit separately for each year and explain excess absences.
-
After the ten-year period Apply for registration Prepare residence evidence and address the applicable good-character requirements.
There is no upper application age. Any discretion over absences must be considered under the relevant guidance, not assumed from the total alone.
What This Route Allows
Registration gives citizenship otherwise than by descent, the right of abode and normal transmission to a future child born abroad. There is no visa, renewal or settlement stage.
What This Route Is Not
It is not ten years of residence at any age and is not satisfied by simply having remained enrolled at a UK address. The evidence must cover birth through the tenth birthday and explain travel. A person already British should apply for a passport, not registration.
Next Steps
- Obtain the full UK birth certificate and all passports or travel records for the first ten years.
- Build a year-by-year absence table; the 90-day test applies separately to each year of life.
- Gather school, NHS, benefit, tenancy and parent records covering gaps.
- Explain any excess absence and apply through the official online service or use Form T for a paper application.
