Summary

Current British Overseas Territories citizenship can support a section 4A application for British citizenship, subject to the applicable government decision and checks. Prepare the status evidence, referees, and good-character records for Form B(OTA). Local rules about living in an overseas territory remain a separate issue.

Check for existing British citizenship before registering
  1. Establish BOTC status Document how the overseas-territories citizenship was acquired.
  2. Check automatic citizenship and exclusions Review the 2002 automatic grant, sole Sovereign Base Areas connection, and any formal renunciation.
  3. Apply under section 4A if needed Provide the required identity, status, referee, and applicable good-character evidence.
  4. Complete the required ceremony After approval, finish any ceremony requirement before using the citizenship record for a passport.

BOTC and British citizenship are distinct statuses. This application is unnecessary if British citizenship already arose automatically.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

The applicant must be a BOTC and not already British; good character applies from age 10. The route excludes a person whose BOTC status is connected only with the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. It also excludes a former British citizen who ceased to be British by formal renunciation; the resumption provisions should be checked instead.

No UK residence, language or Life in the UK test is required. Registration is decided case by case in legal form, so identity, BOTC status and good-character evidence must be complete. From 8 April 2026 the adult cost is £1,670 including the £130 ceremony fee; a child application is £1,000 and may qualify for a fee waiver.

What This Route Allows

Registration gives British citizenship otherwise than by descent, the right of abode and access to a British passport. BOTC status continues separately. There is no visa, renewal or settlement stage.

What This Route Is Not

BOTC status does not necessarily give the right to live in a particular overseas territory: local belonger and immigration laws remain separate. Conversely, local residence or belonger status does not by itself prove BOTC.

The British citizenship certificate is not a travel document. After the ceremony, travel as a British citizen normally requires a British passport or a certificate of entitlement to the right of abode.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm BOTC status with a passport or nationality certificate and how it was acquired.
  2. Check whether British citizenship arose automatically in 2002.
  3. Rule out the Sovereign Base Areas and prior-renunciation exclusions.
  4. Apply under Form B(OTA), supply two referees and address all good-character matters.
  5. Attend the ceremony if required, then apply for a British citizen passport.
